I think part of the reason is that Ive always been sort of an independent spirit I like to do things my way without anyone else telling me how to do it (which is why Ive threatened on numerous occasions to leave the males in my family along the road somewhere the next time they try to tell me how to drive).I think some of my other reasons are pretty common for a lot of people: asking for help may cause others to think Im weak or incapable; Im afraid Ill be turned down by asking for assistance, embarrassing everyone involved; or I just think it will be easier to buckle down and do everything myself.Then I read M. Nora Klavers book and had a change of heart. For the first time, I saw that asking for help doesnt necessarily mean Ive somehow lost. Instead, asking for help at the right time, for the right reasons and from the right people can be, as she says, a blessing.In Mayday! Asking for Help in Times of Need, Klaver writes: T he act of asking for help is not only an invitation, it is a declaration, an assertion that we are deserving of assistance. When we venture to ask for what we need, we learn quickly that we are not alone and that there are resources, friends, and partners available to help. Asking for help can also re-introduce us to the beauty and inherent strength of gratitude.At a time when were all struggling to have work/life balance, Klaver says that asking for assistance may just lead us to a simpler, easier life one that helps us achieve that balance.Still, asking for help is not always easy, especially at work. The key, she says, it not to reach out for help as a last resort, mired in desperation. What to Bring to Your Job Interview There is often nothing as exciting as receiving a phone call and learning that you have been invited to a job interview. It means that, after looking at potentially hundreds of applicants for the position, you have been selected as one of the top few. You are only a few great interviews away from getting the job. But there is still one step left â€" the job interview. Your role is to do whatever it takes to impress the hiring manager(s) and help them envision you in the role. In most cases, that means answering questions in the most professional and impressive way possible. Yet sometimes it is not what you say, but what you bring, that makes you stand out as a candidate. Items You Can Consider Bringing to the Job Interview Not every position requires you to bring something with you. But there are some careers where bringing specific items clearly makes sense. The following are some potential items that you should consider bringing if it makes sense for the position. Copies of Your Resume Unless instructed otherwise, bring enough copies of your resume that you can hand them to any interviewer that needs one. This shows excellent preparation, as hiring managers rarely come with your resume on hand. Pen and Paper Taking notes during the interview can be helpful for you. It allows you to remember details about the position, jot down any questions that you may want to ask, write down names of people you meet, and more. It also shows the interviewer that you came prepared. Make sure you bring these items so that you can be better prepared for the interview process. Proof of Ability Finally, if there is any item that helps prove your talents in the role, you should consider bringing it. A software programmer may consider bringing a USB with their software. A data analyst may want to provide spreadsheets or infographics about what they’ve found. If there is some piece of information that proves that you are the best person for the role, it is at least worth considering. Preparation Tells the Employer about You You do not necessarily need to bring any item to the job interview unless it is requested. You should also not bring every piece of work you have ever completed. The Problem with Focusing on Results

The Problem with Focusing on Results It’s tempting to focus on results. After all, we tend to get recognized and rewarded based on the results we produce. It also makes things simpler. As a business manager, you set a sales target. As a sports coach, you set out to win the championship. As a corporate employee, the result might be to get promoted, or as a player, to score 20 points a game. While these results are highly desired, it can be counterproductive or downright bad for you when you focus primarily on the result. When you focus too much on the result One of my colleagues, let’s call him Don, was in exactly that position. When the head of his division declared an aspirational target of quadrupling sales to $100 million, Don not only embraced it, he made it his personal mission to ensure that he and his team achieved their $20 million portion of the goal. Never mind that they had just had their best year yet at $5 million, or that the division head’s number was an aspirational target to shoot for rather than a “make or break” command, Don drew up a plan with his executive team and they were off to the races. He seemed like a man obsessed. Partway through, they reached $10 million, a new high-water mark. But instead of celebrating, Don drove his team even harder. Everyone redoubled their efforts and redoubled them again. That’s when the turnover started to happen in his team. People went from excited to exhausted. Don’s obsession with reaching the $20 million target made it the only positive result. Anything less would be failure. And in this obsession with the result, Don had gone beyond the point of diminishing returns. Not only has the team not achieved this goal yet, Don’s reputation suffered in the meantime. What to focus on instead Don wasn’t wrong to care about the result. In fact, you need to keep an eye on results in order to achieve them. You can’t arrive at your destination if you don’t know where that is. But rather than putting all of the emphasis on the end result, which can often set you up for failure, focus on the process. Identify the steps that will put you and your team in the best position to achieve the goal and do everything that’s in your control to get there. Focusing on the process would have saved Don’s reputation and given the team something energizing to work on. Things like making a certain number of calls each week, identifying the product improvements their clients wanted, and expanding the universe of potential clients they were calling on. These are all things in their control and, therefore, achievable as wins along the way. The sales results are the byproduct of the process and efforts of the team. Formula for Success This concept of focusing on the process is a large part of the success formula for my husband’s championship basketball team. What people see on the surface level are the stellar results: his team has won the championship two years in a row, and he’s been named Coach of the Year both years. But when you go behind the scenes, it’s clear that winning the championship â€" or even any particular game â€" is not the sole focus. Of course they want to win every game but their focus is on the process and putting in the work day in and day out to prepare to win â€" going through practices, taking care of their physical condition, building camaraderie as a team. There’s no talk around the team about next year’s championship. In fact, when the team plays badly yet still ends up winning a game, my husband is upset and eager to improve. To paraphrase him: you can play badly and still end up winning on the scoreboard. And by the same token, you can do everything right and still lose the game. It’s about the process and the journey.
