Cram-sorption Learning Intelligence Testing - Whats the Connection - Work It Daily

Pack sorption Learning Intelligence Testing - Whats the Connection - Work It Daily By J.T. O'Donnell I simply read a short, clever post by Dan Reich, a blogger for BrazenCareerist.com in which he discloses why he intends to begin the University of Nothing. In school, Reich says he had to utilize 'pack sorption learning.' This is an investigation procedure that necessary him to retain data just to breeze through an assessment and get a passing mark, yet that additionally made him speedily overlook what he realized. At his new college, he's anticipating executing 'revelation learning' - where understudies are given a target without directions, and afterward urged to utilize any assets to accomplish the goal. Reich accepts the procedure of disclosure will assist understudies with disguising and focus on memory what is found out while attempting to meet the goal (a.k.a. learning by doing). It was unexpected to peruse this post since I'd quite recently got done with perusing Sir Ken Robinson's new book, The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything. In it, Robinson additionally plots issues influencing our training framework today. Specifically, he talks about the shifting types of insight and how our schools don't take into account the improvement of a wide range of knowledge. He additionally clarifies the historical backdrop of knowledge testing and how it is defective. To help his cases, Robinson gives unbelievable accounts of expert accomplishment about acclaimed individuals who, as youngsters, were named anything besides smart. He shows how their capacity to disregard society's meanings of 'shrewd' and its rehashed endeavors to declare constraints on them really pushed these people to refute society and discover proficient accomplishment on their own terms. Robinson proceeds to talk about the significance of perceiving not 'on the off chance that' you ar e smart, however 'how' you are astute so as to recognize vocation ways that will use your qualities and increment your expert fulfillment. (On the off chance that you are intrigued, here's a video of a discourse he did regarding the matter.) As I mulled over what these two men had composed, I saw a fascinating association between them… just as a significant exercise for work searchers. As the New Year draws near, thousands, no really, a huge number of Americans will guarantee 'another profession in the new year' as their 2009 goals. Over 2M school graduates alone will enter the activity advertise with this objective in 2009, directly as the joblessness rate is required to reach 9% and the quantity of employments for section level graduates is relied upon to drop over 8%. Also, the normal occupation searcher is under-taught with regards to realizing what to look like for work adequately. Discussion about unpleasant chances! To put it plainly, a large number of these goals won't work out as expected. Be that as it may, I put my cash on the individuals who comprehend the straightforward truth to jumping on target expertly: a disclosure learning way to deal with finding a profession that use an individual's own one of a kind insight is the most ideal approach to discover what they're searching for. At the point when assembled, Reich's and Robinson's considerations on l earning and knowledge open the key to discovering proficient achievement. Furthermore, since you know the association, the inquiries remains - How might I apply this to my pursuit of employment endeavors? Well, here's the appropriate response... Throughout recent years, I've encouraged the individuals who are searching for more noteworthy vocation fulfillment how to use the accompanying condition: Experience = Learn = Grow It's a reality - the individuals who approach pursuit of employment and profession advancement as a development procedure reliably observe better outcomes. In the event that you might want to figure out how to execute this into your vocation technique, go along with me at CAREEREALISM TV for a live communicate on Sunday, January fourth, from 12-1pm EST. A youthful pledge drive had the propensity for showing up for a gathering with her manager by spreading herself genuinely over a huge space at the table. This, in addition to her propensity for setting her attaché and her water bottle on the two sides of her on the table, bewildered her chief. The worker was getting settled however her manager saw her essence as an intrusion of her space. This was hurtful to their relationship and made her supervisor uncommonly awkward, regardless of the way that the manager had the entirety of the force authoritatively. Various Cues Outward appearance Human countenances are amazingly expressive. Feelings, for example, outrage, bliss, hurt, appall, disarray, and weariness are for the most part effectively communicated with facial developments utilizing the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and different highlights. Non-verbal communication The manner in which an individual sits; stands; moves arms, hands, and feet; other unpretentious developments. Stance How you conduct yourself including bearing, position, unbending nature, uprightness. You pass on a message by means of your stance and situating whether you are reclining serenely, sitting inflexibly as eager and anxious as ever, or reclining with your eyes shut. Eye to eye connection Individuals regularly ascribe reliability to individuals who talk while keeping in touch and the other way around. Eye to eye connection is likewise used to pass on intrigue and feelings, and to advance affinity with the beneficiary of the message. It is additionally used to fake intrigue, deceive, and counterfeit intrigue. Motions Hand motions are particularly rich transports of correspondence. They accentuate the expressed word and include meaning. Less cognizant signals, for example, scratching your nose, stroking your hair, pulling on your garments, setting your hands on your hips, and waving can convey messages incidentally. Signs Signs and different articles with words, pictures or images are viewed as a type of nonverbal correspondence. Attire and Other Appurtenances (Briefcases, Safety Glasses, Etc.) Sorts of dress and your appearance send amazing nonverbal messages. A portion of the messages are deliberate as when the representative wears a shirt with her preferred athletic group decorated on the back or the worker who wears a moderate, professional suit each day. Individuals may send different messages unexpectedly without understanding the effect of their message on the beneficiary. The wearer of the preservationist suits may seem disconnected when that was not his expectation. He simply needed to seem prepared for business, reliable, and trustworthy. The wearer of a low profile pullover could conceivably need her associates to locate her provocative. Best case scenario, notwithstanding, she sends a blended message. Office Décor At work, how you brighten your office likewise sends messages to representatives who enter. Where you place your work area, the separation between your seat and those of guests, regardless of whether furniture isolates you from colleagues all talk capably. Tone and Other Paralinguistic Aspects Paralinguistics is vocal correspondence separate from the genuine words utilized and incorporates such factors as intonation, pitch, pacing, delays, and uproar. This is basic for phone just as face to face collaboration. Contact Contact is a ground-breaking strategy for nonverbal correspondence. A gesture of congratulations, an embrace, an individual contacting contact your hand in sympathy communicate with or with no going with words. Physical Space Similarly as your utilization of physical space in your office transmits a message to the recipient, so does the space that you encircle yourself with when working or imparting. Most North Americans incline toward around 18 creeps of room around their physical individual. Anything closer is seen as excessively close and, particularly in a work setting, excessively cozy. In one of the most entertaining bombed correspondence endeavors at any point saw, an understudy from another nation was attempting to disclose something to the American college's enlistment center. He needed to draw nearer to her so he could assist her with understanding why he was correct, a training that functioned admirably in his nation of root. She needed her 18 crawls of room and was resolved to look after it. So they were actually pursuing each other over the workplace. Each time he drew nearer, she moved away. Only one out of every odd event talks this uproariously, yet a people assurance of that private space is quick. At the point when Nonverbal and Verbal Communication Dont Match At the point when a befuddle exists between what you are expressing verbally and the nonverbal signs you are sending, nonverbal correspondence reverberates more with your crowd. For instance, when a worker reveals to you that all is well, yet everything about his tone, outward appearance, body stance, and inability to grin dont coordinate, you don't accept the words. Thusly, if your nonverbal correspondence is going to work well for you as an instrument to improve your general correspondence, you have to build up a mindfulness about coordinating your nonverbal correspondence to your words. At the point when Nonverbal Communication Matters For good or sick, nonverbal correspondence can support you or frequent you. Most essentially, perceive the force it needs to influence the results of your correspondence. Regardless of whether you are addressing the entire organization at an organization meeting, visiting with an associate on the telephone, or conversing with your manager in her office, nonverbal correspondence influences the communication. Nonverbal correspondence is additionally incredible in your everyday gatherings with colleagues and your passing cooperations in the lobbies of your working environment. Its huge at your snacks either in or outside of your association. At long last, perceive the intensity of your nonverbal correspondence with your organization partners, your customers or clients, your sellers, and your expert partners. Coordinating your nonverbal correspondence to your verbally expressed words will assist them with confiding in you. You can rehearse and deal with your nonverbal correspondence to pass on your messages all the more viably. Or on the other hand, you can permit your nonverbal correspondence to cause you to seem ineffectual, a messy communicator, or a representative whose blended messages are not reliable. A Day In The Life Of A Drama Student

A Day In The Life Of A Drama Student Drama students are seen as inventive sorts who swan round quoting Shakespeare and skim sonnets. But is this all there is to it? Image by Augusta State PR It’s not simply espresso and soliloquies People have so many preconceptions when they hear the word ‘scholar’. Worse still, once I inform people I research Drama, I can see their eyes glaze over as they think about me quoting Shakespeare and lazing around in treetops. Well I’m sorry to disappoint, guys, but there’s extra to it than that. My fellow Drama students are some of the hardest working folks I have ever met. This is on the nights we’re not watching, studying or performing in a play in some hazy ‘fringe venue’ that is actually only a darkish cellar underneath a pub. When we do rise, like all different students, we now have our lectures, seminars and workshops â€" although our problems do range slightly from all other disciplines. Some of my housemates examine History, and are continuously frustrated at being the only ones who contribute to seminar discussions. On the opposite, the biggest problem for us Drama students is definitely getting a word in. Want to make a degree? You’re going to have to be prepared to speak over, interrupt and shout down the opposite twenty folks within the room to make your self heard. Most days proceed in a rehearsal room engaged on some performance for the next class, or maybe working lines for the play you’ve determined to placed on as a result of, nicely, you need to. Most of my course-mates are frequently rehearsing for multiple present at a time, splitting their evenings between the varied firms they work with. All free of charge. After all of this, which takes up many of the day, we would catch a present. Maybe one which a friend is in, or an organization we’ve labored for are placing on. But extra doubtless we’ll be off to a minimal-wage job that is pretty irrelevant to our life plan. Why? How else do you assume we fund our visits to the theatre and journeys to London? Spare time What’s that? We’ve gone to class, had a rehearsal, accomplished a shift at work and managed to get residence earlier than midnight. continue paper is old continue paper is old A peruser composes: What are your musings on continue paper? What do employing supervisors consider it, on the off chance that they even notification? I am going to thusly liberate you from any motivation to ever buy continue paper again. Cool office spaces are based on a once-exploitative model

Cool office spaces depend on a once-exploitative model Cool office spaces depend on a once-exploitative model Unimportant photographs of the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, rouse profound respect. The brilliant stylistic layout, approaching glass windows, toy-like bicycle stations, and immense heated merchandise sculptures cause the grounds to appear to be more similar to a modern Disneyland than a place of business rounded with working drones producing the organization's most recent products. But behind these new-age corporate grounds lies the unpleasant heritage of industrialization, and with it the models made to pull in representatives attached to their corporate establishments. In spite of the fact that workplaces with specialty lager on tap and masseuses accessible if the need arises may appear to be a long ways from the organization towns that characterized corporate life into the twentieth century, according to Quartz, the two business procedures share auxiliary similitudes that may cause us to recoil when we consider the implications.Living at workAs the Industrial Revolutio n spearheaded new manufacturing plant models that pre-owned game-evolving innovation, laborers started to move to mechanical habitats for employments in a recently stamped workforce. Yet, as displayed by the bits of knowledge of celebrated scholars, for example, Karl Marx, the contemporary urban scene had not modernized enough to suit a flood, and laborers' privileges and advantages were ideas unfamiliar to a general public that had scarcely removed itself from feudalism.Company towns were an answer for a still needy workforce that depended on businesses to give necessities, for example, social insurance and food. Settled close to mechanical hotbeds, for example, coal mineshafts or chocolate industrial facilities, the business run towns harbored everything a laborer could require yet at the same time would in general advantage the business owner. Some of the organization towns were out and out exploitative, charging laborers extreme entireties for fundamental merchandise and diving t hem into a lifetime of obligation. In any case, others were at any rate proposed to improve personal satisfaction for employees.Regardless, they were totally founded on similar standards: Centrality, or keeping work fundamental to life; fenced in area, or separation from different networks; insularity, or detachment dependent on a completely working inside network; and culmination, or absence of requirement for anything past work.Sound familiar?Work/life balance todayRide in a WeWork lift, and you'll see a schedule with the month's occasions. Maybe there's an activity class one morning or a parody appear around evening time. The open doors are endless. In certainty, the calendar sounds so fun that it would appear to be senseless to ever leave. Why head off to some place to pay for the things you love when you can wait and do them for free?To a specific degree, these advantages are an update for the workforce. For instance, a few organizations have begun cooking suppers for their repr esentatives, which spares untold totals for individuals attempting to live in the nation's most serious land markets. These facilities show thought and care from recognizing CEOs who comprehend the necessities of individuals who work around them. But as significant organizations, for example, Amazon and Facebook progressively incline toward grounds that go a long ways past free food, an unsettling design develops: Their workplaces use centrality, nook, insularity, and culmination to legitimize long, late hours at the workplace and a tricky connection among work and life. The sensible outrageous of these laborer patterns lands some place along the lines of Dave Eggers' book The Circle, which shows how the individual and expert can become one obscured substance as representatives live busy working. Be that as it may, even in less tragic conditions, the new situations and their similitudes to organization towns make one wonder, Is this truly healthy? As eye-getting as the Googleplex might be, its staggering exterior can't veil the entirety of the force elements its very structure infers. So perhaps it's an ideal opportunity to reevaluate what we, as laborers, need from our employments, and how much freedom we're willing to surrender for an apparently idealistic working environment.

Five ways technology is changing Learning and Development

Five ways technology is changing Learning and Development by Amber Rolfe Technology is fundamentally shaping the way organisations learnThanks to the development of various e-learning technologies, online learning has become a reality. This makes carrying out continuing professional development (CPD) absolutely vital for LD practitioners who want to keep their skills relevant. We spoke to  Watson Martin Partnership, a leading provider of professional qualifications, to find out five of the key ways technology is changing Learning and Development:The rise of mobile and tablet devices The rise of portable devices has given us a lot: a way to browse social media and chat on-the-go; a platform to enjoy a range of apps; the opportunity to Google the symptoms of every illness we’ve ever had (OK, this one might not be a benefit). But aside from offering a sense of convenience in our recreational lives, mobile and tablet devices have also provided the perfect place for interactive learning content. As materials can now be accessed via a rang e of devices, learners are offered an increased level of autonomy, flexibility, and control. Not only can they choose when and where they study, they can also learn at their own pace. These developments have additionally provided LD practitioners with the foundations they need to better support individual learning processes. The increase in ‘bringing your own device to work’ With an increasing number of employees opting to use their own devices not only at work, but also from home or when working remotely, organisations have come up with new ways to make universal access easier.By creating learning apps and programmes, organisations are able to give individuals direct access to learning materials and resources from any device, which ultimately helps to maximise their workforce’s productivity.LD practitioners also use apps to communicate more effectively with delegates â€" whether it’s to track an event, register its attendance, or provide an online vault of learning materials.  The gamification of learning Chances are, you’ve had your fair share of mild addictions to mobile games (see: Plants Vs. Zombies/ Candy Crush/Pokemon GO/all of the above). With the wide variety of mobile and tablet games that are now available, it’s no surprise that the learning and development industry have utilised their popularity. From gamified micro courses that help employees get to grips with procedures or software, to educational apps that teach through quizzes, videos, flashcards, and memory games â€" the gamification of learning materials provides a fast and easy way to digest information.By linking games with learning activities, organisations can tap into people’s desires of socialising, being rewarded, and making choices â€" which consequently makes them more likely to engage with the content and apply what they’ve learnt practically. The opportunity to interact virtually Don’t understand a question? Working on a group project? Just need to vent? No problem.Whe ther it’s to assist the communication of virtual teams, or to build an online learning community, the rise of social media and other communication tools have played a big part in supporting learners. It offers the perfect way to connect groups of people who are getting to grips with the same topic â€" whether they’re taking an online or classroom course, carrying out an independent learning venture, or doing work-based learning and development.By creating online groups or utilising hashtags, instructors, LD professionals, and learners are able to share and access a range of information; from quizzes and questionnaires, to images and tips.Because social media doesn’t need to be a distraction (as long as you use it right).Top 5 â€" Desktop distractionsThe assessment of progress As a result of advancements in tech, tracking your development has never been easier. In the past, feedback was only able to be given at the end of a learning intervention, consisting of a review â€" rather than an on-the-spot assessment. With new online tools, learners can benefit from a better monitoring system that tracks their learning as they go.This means learners receive a more personalised, tailored and effective approach in their e-learning and online modules. And with more formative types of assessments, self-reflection and improvement is much easier.Personalised feedback can also be provided if needed, which allows the learner to immediately identify and reflect on their learning. Why study with Watson Martin Partnership?Watson Martin Partnership is a leading provider of professional qualifications and in-company training programmes. Not only do they offer 24/7 support via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with access to podcasts, webinars, videos and learning materials, they also have above average pass rates on their professional exams.Other benefits of studying with  Watson Martin Partnership  include:One-to-one support for all qualification programmesModules taught by in dustry expertsFlexible start dates, durations and locationsA range of payment options, with interest free monthly payment  plans for self-fundersOnline, classroom and distance learning optionsCIPD Learning Development Certificate Level 3 This Foundation CIPD qualification  will enhance your understanding of a range of LD learning practices and specialisms. Just follow the tips below and take a peek at the sample model resume we’ve included for reference! Key Items to Include To Your Model ResumeIf you are creating your first resume, here’s a quick recap of the key sections you should include.Prominent header featuring your name and contact information (phone and email only please).A “zinger” of a biography that is no more than two sentences, but that also points to the value you can bring to the agency. If you have modeled for a well-known client (large retailer, for example), brag it here.Headshot: Place a high-quality portrait shot either by your name or right underneath your bio. Keep the rest of your pics for your portfolio , or print them out separately if the job posting instructs you to do so.Portfolio: Link to your portfolio in bold before you move on to other sections.Experience is the next section. Here you can use either a chronological or a functional format, whichever suits you best.If you are a freelancer or part-time model, opt for a functional resume that lists your clients and a brief description of your work for them.If you have worked for agencies, then list them in chronological order. On the other hand, if you are a newbie without clients or an agency, then use a functional resume with what experience you have had (have you modeled for local charity events, for example; did you participate in fashion shows in high school or college at local events?).For more details, check our complete guide to writing a resume.Education â€" Is it important? You don’t need a degree to be an amazing model. Execution surveys, directed officially or casually, are a helpful device for discovering progressively about the requirements and objectives of your group. They likewise give a chance to you to explain destinations, survey desires, and recognize where, how and why representatives may require extra help. Without normal criticism from you and the opportunity to make little scope course rectifications, your staff individuals are not liable to perceive the need to improve their presentation. They may not be persuaded to extend their capacities. They additionally may battle to perceive how their commitments help have any kind of effect: More than half of laborers (53 percent) in a Management Resources review detailed that they need more prominent bits of knowledge into how their obligations sway their organization's presentation. Additionally, holding up until the yearly execution survey cycle to give acclaim on workers who have earned it can sabotage assurance - and conceivably, hurt your association's maintenance endeavors. Another way to deal with suit new business requests? Another explanation your organization may need to rethink the estimation of the yearly execution survey process is that you might be working uniquely in contrast to you did before. On the off chance that your firm resembles numerous organizations, it might no longer have clear yearly cycles; rather, it is driven by transient tasks. Along these lines, as opposed to defining worker objectives a year ahead of time, it might bode well to think of achievements for them to accomplish consistently. Remember that making a consistent criticism circle doesn't simply profit your workers. It can spare you time once you adjust to the new procedure. You may think that its a lot simpler to fit to put it plainly, easygoing worker surveys sprinkled during the time than cutting out one enormous piece of time to get ready for and direct conventional execution assessments for your whole group. More than 33% (36 percent) of (HR) supervisors surveyed for an overview said their organization is expanding the recurrence of execution audits. While 40 percent of respondents said these examinations despite everything happen yearly, 28 percent report that they are directed two times per year at their organization and 10 percent said they occur quarterly. What's more, 14 percent of HR chiefs overviewed said their associations direct these surveys varying. On the off chance that you chose to change the recurrence of your presentation audits, try to reexamine your general procedure too. Here are a few systems for progress: Make it a conversation Recall that representatives can discover execution surveys - even casual registration - threatening. That is the reason it's imperative to structure these gatherings like two-way discussions. You need to share your input, however you additionally need to welcome your worker to react to it. You likewise need to make a situation where staff individuals feel they can be transparent with you, as well. For tips on encouraging a positive working environment culture, read this uncommon report from Robert Half. Thus, listen more and talk less. Rather than telling representatives how they evaluated in specific territories and why they got the scores they turned, the procedure topsy turvy. Get some information about their qualities and shortcomings, and to offer recommendations for both individual and division wide improvement. Also, make certain to tune in for indications with respect to their degree of working environment joy and fulfillment. Concentrate on what's to come Rather than harping on past victories or disappointments in an exhibition audit, center around the organization's up and coming needs and how the representative fits into that enormous picture. For instance, what specialized preparing do your money related examiners need to benefit as much as possible from the new cloud-based programming your association has actualized? For your rising whizzes, examine coaching and initiative preparing. Likewise, you may locate these balanced gatherings can assist you with identifying applicants that are a solid match for the association's progression arranging targets. Just about half (52 percent) of CFOs in an ongoing Management Resources study said they had just discovered a potential replacement for their position. Address upskilling During increasingly visit execution audit gatherings, you can help workers all the more plainly observe territories for proficient development, for example, the need to improve explicit abilities or learn new ones. Upskilling is particularly significant today as innovation keeps on changing how we work. Research directed for Benchmarking Accounting and Finance Functions: 2018, an exceptional report from and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF), finds that numerous organizations are growing their utilization of robotization and distributed computing. As they do, they need support from laborers who have involvement in information investigation, endeavor asset arranging (ERP) frameworks, and that's only the tip of the iceberg. Upskilling is additionally significant for selecting and holding millennial experts: These laborers are not liable to be fulfilled in their occupations on the off chance that they're not offered important chances to learn. Separate objective setting and compensation conversations Numerous organizations base money related prizes - yearly or half-yearly rewards, merit expands, maintenance rewards - on formal assessments. That doesn't have to change, in spite of the fact that you might need to consider isolating that discussion from the input procedure. The presentation audit is an opportunity to recognize workers' qualities and examine procedures for positive change and development. Ensure you're offering serious pay to your group by counseling the information in Robert Half's 2019 Salary Guides. As a money related supervisor, your point is to encourage a solid relationship with your staff and inspire them to accomplish their best work, obviously. Yet, very frequently, the yearly execution survey is counterproductive to that objective. Right or off-base, numerous specialists fear these examinations since they consider them to be a path for the executives to point out their deficiencies. In this new year, consider overturning this good old force dynamic by reevaluating your way to deal with assessing your colleagues' presentation. ?? How To Start Massively Crowdsourcing Your Job Search Today

?? How To Start Massively Crowdsourcing Your Job Search Today 572 You'd be surprised how much help you can get if you just ask. Photo by John Ashley Did you know that online community crowdsourcing can help you on your job search? I mean, why not? People like to help people. That was one of the reasons I started JobMob back in 2006, that's one of the reasons you find it hard to ignore questions when asked, and that's why so many people volunteer.eval Let's see how crowdsourcing can work for your job search. Have you told your social networks about your job search? Yes No View Results Free bonus: The One Resume Resource You’ll Ever Need is a handy reference to make your resume get you more job interviews. Download it free noweval 5 ways to get free job search help from the online masses 1) Get job search feedback There are many places you can go to ask job search questions, but you want to go somewhere where people will actually respond and hopefully often, people in the know. Even if you're a new visitor. One good place is the social network Reddit. Head over to Reddit Jobs to ask any job search question and people will respond. I will respond there too, sometimes. Or, if you want feedback about your resume, work portfolio, personal website or any job search-related creation of yours, just ask for it on Reddit Design_Critiques. Another option is to upload to YouTube a video of yourself being interviewed (e.g. by a friend) or of you giving your elevator pitch, and then sharing the clip to get feedback. 2) Compile job search research Researching a list of companies to target? Trying to decide which skills you should improve to meet industry demand? Or maybe you're just trying to gauge that same industry demand? Go to where other professionals hang out on popular question answers sites such as Quora, Yahoo Answers or Ask Metafilter. But don't just post ‘can someone help me?' Be as specific as possible about what you want to know: “What do you think will be the hottest skills this coming year in [industry X]?” “Can you recommend a company in Y city/area that has had a lot of success hiring new grads who majored in Z?” (Or if that's not you- “pros with more than 20 years of experience?”) Another tack is to get inspired by asking people to tell how they found their job in a specific industry. 3) Have job leads found for you In 2002, I finally ended my almost year-long job search by creating a contest. Here's how CNNMoney reported my story in 2009:

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Learning to Ask for Help

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Learning to Ask for Help First, let me admit that I am not big on asking for help. I think part of the reason is that Ive always been sort of an independent spirit I like to do things my way without anyone else telling me how to do it (which is why Ive threatened on numerous occasions to leave the males in my family along the road somewhere the next time they try to tell me how to drive).I think some of my other reasons are pretty common for a lot of people: asking for help may cause others to think Im weak or incapable; Im afraid Ill be turned down by asking for assistance, embarrassing everyone involved; or I just think it will be easier to buckle down and do everything myself. Then I read M. Nora Klavers book and had a change of heart. For the first time, I saw that asking for help doesnt necessarily mean Ive somehow lost. Instead, asking for help at the right time, for the right reasons and from the right people can be, as she says, a blessing. In Mayday! Asking for Help in Times of Need, Klaver writes: T he act of asking for help is not only an invitation, it is a declaration, an assertion that we are deserving of assistance. When we venture to ask for what we need, we learn quickly that we are not alone and that there are resources, friends, and partners available to help. Asking for help can also re-introduce us to the beauty and inherent strength of gratitude. At a time when were all struggling to have work/life balance, Klaver says that asking for assistance may just lead us to a simpler, easier life one that helps us achieve that balance.Still, asking for help is not always easy, especially at work. The key, she says, it not to reach out for help as a last resort, mired in desperation. Rather, she says, asking for help should be thought of as a way to help ourselves grow and make meaningful connections with other people.Klaver offers numerous tips and suggestions in her book about how, when and why to ask for help, but Id like to focus on some questions you can use to get your conversation going when asking for help:1. Would you be willing to help me with something? Is now a good time?2. Ive got something Im trying to resolve, can you give me a hand?3. Im desperate, can you help me please? (This humorous approach should be used when you know the other person pretty well.)4. Im stuck and I cant see clearly how to resolve this. Would you be willing to help me come up with a few ideas? And, if theyre not able to help, ask: Can you suggest someone else who might be able to help? Do you know anyone who has had a similar suggestion? Do you know how they resolved it?After I interviewed Klaver, I began to think of all the times I helped someone in need. I thought about how great I felt by doing it. In this world of chaos and stress and uncertainty, helping someone else whether it was providing a business contact or offering someone a ride home on a hot summer day made me feel good, more at peace. So, the next time you need help, dont suck it up and do it all your self. Spread the blessings around and reach out.

What to Bring to Your Job Interview

What to Bring to Your Job Interview There is often nothing as exciting as receiving a phone call and learning that you have been invited to a job interview. It means that, after looking at potentially hundreds of applicants for the position, you have been selected as one of the top few. You are only a few great interviews away from getting the job. But there is still one step left â€" the job interview. Your role is to do whatever it takes to impress the hiring manager(s) and help them envision you in the role. In most cases, that means answering questions in the most professional and impressive way possible. Yet sometimes it is not what you say, but what you bring, that makes you stand out as a candidate. Items You Can Consider Bringing to the Job Interview Not every position requires you to bring something with you. But there are some careers where bringing specific items clearly makes sense. The following are some potential items that you should consider bringing if it makes sense for the position. Copies of Your Resume Unless instructed otherwise, bring enough copies of your resume that you can hand them to any interviewer that needs one. This shows excellent preparation, as hiring managers rarely come with your resume on hand. If they have a copy, you can review it together, instead of making them try to remember what was on your resume or forcing them to take time out of their day to print it themselves. Portfolio â€" When Applicable There are many careers these days where a portfolio is necessary for the position. Examples include graphic designer, content writer, architect, landscaper, and more. It is to your benefit to have your portfolio on hand to show the hiring managers your talents.  And if you know youll be interviewing with a panel, it wouldnt hurt to have a copy for each of them.  This is especially true if you know that you have an excellent history of past works. Pen and Paper Taking notes during the interview can be helpful for you. It allows you to remember details about the position, jot down any questions that you may want to ask, write down names of people you meet, and more. It also shows the interviewer that you came prepared. Make sure you bring these items so that you can be better prepared for the interview process. Proof of Ability Finally, if there is any item that helps prove your talents in the role, you should consider bringing it. A software programmer may consider bringing a USB with their software. A data analyst may want to provide spreadsheets or infographics about what they’ve found. If there is some piece of information that proves that you are the best person for the role, it is at least worth considering. Preparation Tells the Employer about You You do not necessarily need to bring any item to the job interview unless it is requested. You should also not bring every piece of work you have ever completed. But there are certainly times when what you bring not only shows the employer your talent, but also helps them see how prepared you are as a person. It is that preparation, in addition to your skills and talents, that will show the employer you are someone worth considering for the role.
